Protecting Yourself Online as a Breeder: Password and Security Tips

Updated over 4 months ago

Online security is more important than ever. Around 40% of cybercrimes involve stolen passwords, which means if you use the same password across multiple accounts, a single data breach can put all your other accounts at risk.

Here are some simple ways to strengthen your online safety.

1. Create Strong, Unique Passwords

Tips for safer passwords:

  • Use a different password for every platform.

  • Make sure each password is at least 16 characters long.

  • Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

  • Refer to the “password safety” image below for examples of strong password formats.

How to create a memorable, secure password (see “password-techniques” image):

  1. Start with a sentence or phrase you’ll remember (for example, lyrics from your favourite song).

  2. Take the first letter of each word in that sentence.

  3. Add a memorable date, like the birthday of your first breeding girl.

  4. Replace certain letters with symbols to make it even stronger.

2. Use a Password Manager

Let’s be real — it’s impossible to remember 30 different strong passwords across your accounts (Facebook, Instagram, bank, RightPaw, email, etc).

A password manager can help by securely storing all your passwords in one place.

  • You only need to remember one master password — the one that unlocks your password manager. 😆

  • Many have browser extensions that automatically fill in your login details.

  • They also sync across devices, so you can log in easily on both your phone and computer.

Recommended password managers:

  • Free: Google Password Manager, Bitwarden

  • Paid: LastPass, 1Password

Refer to the “password-managers” image for more details.

3. Be Careful When Sharing Information with Puppy Buyers

Scammers sometimes pose as puppy buyers to steal breeder identities or sensitive details, which can cause reputational harm.

RightPaw recommends:

  • Speaking with buyers by phone or video call before sharing documents.

  • Taking a deposit before sharing health documents or pedigree papers.

  • Being cautious with bank details — scammers can use them to make fraudulent payments.

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be complicated. By using strong passwords, a reliable password manager, and being careful with the information you share, you can significantly reduce your risk online.
